Happy Christmas/New Year all
Just got back form the usual drunken family shenanigans in South Devon!
Did the entire journey (500 mile round trip) with the roof down, had several long dog walks, played beach cricket on Boxing Day, and went surfing yesterday morning...unsurprisingly, have woken up with a stinking cold - but it was fun!!

What break did you surf? where in devon?

I was in barnstaple just before christmas! i too did a 500 mile round trip in one day, doing store visits for work - not with the roof down i might add!

Re: Happy Christmas/New Year all
A happy post-Christmas and new year... and I've removed the annoying music from the website for another year you'll be glad to hear!
We only managed a 290 mile round trip and I bet ours was more boring than everyone elses... Up the M1 to Leeds and back.
I hope everyone got what they wanted off their pressie wish list.
Now where's that new year dittie soundbyte...

Most of the time in Aveton Gifford, near Kingsbridge - where my parents live, and Christmas Day at my aunts in Cornworthy, near Totnes - and surfing on Bantham Beach - where my dad is harbourmaster.

Re: Happy Christmas/New Year all
an ex of mine did her teaching practice at Aveton gifford primary - and i used to surf and/or take the dog to bantham all the time!
and what a small world - My folks will definately have met your dad, they have had their boat in batham countless times and my dad is a harbour master too - National trust at Newtown creek on the IOW! I doubt your dad would remember him, but might remember his boat, its a 28' maurice griffiths Lone Gull called 'Lonestar'.

Blimey, we weren't far away at all! I should have called you! I went to Bigbury-on-sea on boxing day to throw sticks into the sea for the dogs to fetch! What day were you across the way at Bantham?

Blimey!! His name is Neill - see if they know the name, or remember the red and white springer spaniel which is his constant companion!!! he's been harbourmaster at Bnatham for about 15 years!! Retired officially last year, but he still spends a lot of time there with his own boats, and checking that his replacement is doing a dencent job!! I'll ask him if he knows the boat! Bound to - he remembers pretty much every boat that has moored there!

haha seems you can take the master out of the harbour..... but never the harbour out of the master......
My old man is exactly the same, never remembers names, but always remembers boats..... if hes been at bantham for 15 years they will have certainly met and compared knots and fenders or something - John is the type who would have barged up to the mooring under full sail, against a strong edd tide and got it perfectly first pass! If it helps he is a retired seargent on the solent police launches....
I'll ask him about Neill tonight!

He's a former British officer - of course he speaks proper like!
Am guessing from the use of the word 'is' that your father hasn't heard about Hugh - I'm afraid he is no longer with us, died last year after being very sick for quite a while. He was a lovely old boy - completely led my father astray with his insistence on 'Harbourmasters Prayers' at the pub every lunchtime!

He may not know about the sad news, but i will let him know. I gather that Hugh was good at leading prayer time?
